St. John's Wort + SSRI antidepressantAVOID

Why it matters: Taken together, the two can push serotonin too high — that's serotonin syndrome, which can be dangerous. St. John's Wort also speeds up how the body clears many drugs, weakening them.

Mechanism: Additive serotonergic effect; St. John's Wort also induces CYP3A4/CYP2C9 and P-glycoprotein.

What people usually do: This combination is generally avoided. Do not start or stop either without your prescriber — stopping an antidepressant abruptly carries its own risks.
